These instructions explain how to configure Windows 95/98/ME Networking so that you can access ABHost.us.

INSTALLING DIALUP NETWORKING

For this you will need your Windows 95/98 CD or disks that you received with the computer. If you do not have the CD or floppy disks contact the vendor of the computer or call Microsoft. If you have the Windows 95/98 CD or disks then follow the instructions below.

  1. Click on Start, go to Settings, and go to Control Panel.

  2. Double click Add/Remove Programs


  1. 3. Click on the Windows Setup

    4. In the Components Select Communications and then
    Click on Details.

  1. Check the box beside Dialup Networking and then click OK.
  2. Click on OK again in the previous window.
  3. When asked to insert the Windows 95/98 CD into the CD-ROM or disk with a number (e.g. like disk 12) please do so. If not asked for a CD or floppy; you are fine.
  4. You have successfully installed dialup networking. We will now add the necessary components for Dialup Networking.

Step C

ADDING NETWORKING COMPONENTS FOR YOUR CONNECTION Required: You will need your Windows 95/98 CD or disks. If you do not have the CD or floppy disks then contact the vendor of the computer or call Microsoft.

  1. Click on Start, go to Settings, and go to Control Panel.
  2. Double Click on Network.


  • You should be in the Configuration tab. In the Network Components, if you see Dialup Adapter and TCP/IP you can click on OK and go to Step D.

  • If you do not see Dialup Adapter, click on Add.



  • Select Adapter from the list and then click on Add.
  • In the list on the Left side select Microsoft and then in the list on the right side select Dialup Adapter and then click on OK.



  • When asked to insert the Windows 95/98 CD or disks please do so and then click on OK. If not asked, you are fine.
  • If you see TCP/IP in the list of Network Components installed you are done with installation of the network components. Click on OK and proceed to Step D. If you do not see TCP/IP, Click Add.



  • Select Protocols from the list and click Add.
  • In the list on the right side select Microsoft and in the list on the right select TCP/IP and then click OK.



  1. When asked to insert the Windows 95/98 CD or disks please do so and then click on OK. If it does not ask you for anything then you are fine.
  2. Now you should see TCP/IP in the list with Dialup Adapter. Click on OK.
  3. It should now ask you to restart the computer. Click on Yes.
  4. If not prompted to restart the computer, click on Start, go to Shutdown, and then click on Restart the Computer and then click Yes.


  5. You have successfully added the protocols required for the connections. We will now configure the network protocols we just added.
Step D

MAKING A NEW CONNECTION


  1. Double click on My Computer and then Double click on Dialup Networking.
  2. Double click on Make New Connection
  3. In the new screen, type in a name by which you would like to refer to the connection (e.g. ABHost.us, 56K or whatever you like)
  4. In the same screen, select the modem that you have on the Computer if it is not automatically displayed in the drop down list and click on Next.
  5. In the new screen for the Phone number do not put anything in the Area Code text box. In the Telephone Number text box type in the local number you use to connect to ABHost.Net. For example, in Bellingham WA, you might enter: 360-603-9434 (For a complete list of all access numbers, click here). Please verify the number you are entering is not a toll call from your area. ABHost.Net Communications is not responsibile for any toll charges incurred, so please double check before entering. Once you have entered your local access number click on Next.



  • In the next window Click on Finish.
  • You should now see the Connection you just created in the Dialup
    Networking window. Select the connection you just created by clicking
    it once and then go to File and then Create Shortcut.



  1. It will tell you that it could not create a shortcut and ask you if you want to place the shortcut on the Desktop instead, Click on Yes.
  2. You have now successfully created a new connection. Follow the directions on how to get connected below in order to use the Internet and/or check your mail.

Step E

CONFIGURING THE CONNECTION

  1. Click on the Connection once to select the connection.



  2. Click on File and select Properties.
  3. In the connection properties click on the Server types tab.
  4. At the bottom of the windows, there should be a section saying Allowed Network Protocols. Uncheck NetBEUI and IPX/SPX Compatible and check TCP/IP.
  5. Click on TCP/IP Settings.
  6. In the TCP/IP settings, click on Server assigned IP address.
  7. Click on Specify name server addresses.



  8. For the Primary DNS: type 216.57.206.7
  9. Check Use IP header compression
  10. Check Use default gateway on remote network.
  11. Click on OK. We have now successfully created and configured the connection.

Step F

HOW TO GET CONNECTED

To use Netscape or to check your mail through telnet you must first get connected
  1. To get connected double click on the connection you created on the Desktop. If you cannot find the connection on the Desktop, Click on Start, go to Programs, go to Accessories, and then go to Dialup Networking.



  2. You should now see the connection you created in the Dialup Networking Window. Double click on the connection.
  3. In the new screen, for the Username type in your user name and for the Password type in your password.
  4. Then check the Save password box.
  5. Click on Connect and then your modem should start dialing. It will then tell you that it is Verifying Username and Password and then it should connect you.
  6. Once you are connected you should see two small computers beside the time on the bottom right hand corner of the screen and now you can use a web browser of your choice.

Further Information

Your Windows 95/98 computer comes with a copy of Internet Explorer. However, if you would prefer to use Netscape Navigator or Communicator, you can download a copy of these programs from the Netscape Website
